The purpose of the new sanctuary is to reflect the intimate nature and relationship the iwi have and wish to extend and broaden knowledge of for the overall wellbeing of the people. This includes re-introducing highly sort after and in short supply the whangamarino variety of maanuka, which is distinctive to a sacred place within Waikato-Tainui. This variety has been planted on 25ha of lands, our intention is to seed bank though an indigenous bio-banking method, as well as utilise and supply this taonga to others in our region. The current availability of this variety in our region is fast diminishing and a strategic imperative of this programme of work would be to re-create an abundance of the plant for future generations.
The planting of Maungatautari plants into our areas, and reintroducing eco habitats for wildlife, while simultaneously restoring the mauri of surrounding puna and lands is one important aspect of our programme. The other is the importance of growing authentic relationships with these taonga, including the introduction of biological knowledge’s, science knowledges and maatauaranga Maaori, that becomes a normal part of our everyday activities. To normalise the access and se of medicinal plants, and native plants, the same way in which our tuupuna accessed and utilised these resources is an important awakening in our kaitaikitanga responsibilities.
There is a severe shortage of raakau taketake from maungatautari within our natural habitats and farm lands.
Ngaati Koroki Kahukura do not have their own access to taonga protection frameworks, and must source species and propagation from external partners.
Lack of knowledge to grow and sustain taonga to re-populate into the wild and around our natural estates.
Ultimately build Ngaati Koroki Kahukura Raakau Taketake Nursery to supply and regenerate restoration sites initially from sites 1-7 under the current land diversification programme but extend to reach a whole of area approach to include across the manga, and more extensively within and around Karaapiro and Maungatautari.
This kaupapa connects Ngaati Koroki Kahukura to work with other iwi, hapuu and whaanau within the space to take best practice solutions and apply them in distinctive indigenous domains.
Ngaati Koroki Kahukura strives to become the lead holders of specific endemic species/ taonga nationally and from a distinctively Ngaati Koroki Kahukura position including advancing and leading kaitiakitanga practices.
